Playa Popoyo is situated on the small isthmus that divides Lake Nicaragua from the vast Pacific Ocean. As a result, we receive a consistent year-round off-shore breeze. Popoyo is part of the larger Rivas/Tola Region which experiences little rain and consistent heat from November to April. May marks the beginning of surf season and occasional rains begin to fall. Showers throughout the summer quench the landscape and provide an emerald green hue to the entire region. The rainy season peaks in October.
The local population is dominated by subsistence farmers who depend on the rains to grow the local staple crops of corn, sorghum, rice and beans. Livestock, chickens, and pigs add to the countryside’s appeal as you adventure out into the nearby towns. It’s not uncommon to drive alongside amber seas of sorghum as you make your way to yet another local surf break.
